The Process of Obtaining a Learner’s Permit in Florida

If you’re a first-time driver in Florida, here’s what you need to do to get your learner’s permit:

Meet the Age Requirement:

  • You must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner’s permit in Florida.
    Complete the Required Course:
  • All first-time drivers must complete the Florida Drug and Alcohol Course (TLSAE – Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) before applying.
  • This is a 4-hour online course that covers the effects of drugs and alcohol on driving.

Pass the Florida Knowledge Test:

  • The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions covering road signs, traffic laws, and safe driving practices.
  • You must score at least 80% (40 correct answers out of 50) to pass.
  • The test can be taken online (if under 18) or in person at a DMV office or an authorized third-party location (like Golden Coast Driving School).
    Gather the Required Documents:
  • Proof of identity (Birth certificate, passport, or permanent resident card).
Social Security number (SSN card, W-2, or pay stub with SSN).
  • Proof of Florida residency (two documents, such as a bank statement or utility bill).
Visit a Florida Driver License Office for Vision Test
  • You must pass a vision and hearing test at the DMV or an authorized provider.
  • If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them with you.
    Parental Consent (If Under 18):
  • A parent or guardian must sign the Parent Consent Form (HSMV 71142) in front of a DMV official or get it notarized beforehand.
    Pay the Required Fees:
  • The learner’s permit fee in Florida is $48 (may vary slightly by location).
    Learner’s Permit Rules in Florida:
  • You must drive with a licensed adult (21+) in the front passenger seat.
For the first three months, you can only drive during daylight hours.
  • After three months, you can drive until 10:00 PM.
  • You must hold your learner’s permit for at least one year (or until you turn 18) before applying for a full license.
